This unique collection, published as a supplement for the Czech Republic’s participation in the 24th Triennale di Milano, is distinctive in both its theme and presentation. The theme of this year’s event was “Inequalities,” and the curators of the Czech exhibition, Karolína Kripnerová and Janek Rous, chose to focus on homelessness and housing affordability.
In addition to thematic essays by the two editors, the anthology includes literary texts by those who frequently experience inequality in everyday life: Romani writers represented by Patrik Banga, Marie Siváková and Eva Danišová are joined by Anki, Klára Vlasáková, Prádelna Collective, Dana Lišková and Marie Iljašenko.
In her short story “A Bathtub Full of Foam,” Eva Danišová uses the life story of a Romani woman to show that what is commonplace for one person can be a luxury for another: whether it’s having one’s own bathroom or living a dignified life. In her short story “A 24-Hour Ticket,” Maria Siváková reflects on the life of a young Romani family in Canada and the Czech Republic, as well as their decision to return. In the playful series „Believe It or Not“, Patrik Banga presents readers with stories that may and may not have happened this way and it is up to the readers to guess.
The bilingual English-Czech edition was illustrated by Magdalena Rutová.
