Hušová, Mária

( * 1976, Ondavské Matiašovce, SR )

Mária Hušová comes from the village of Ondavské Matiašovce in eastern Slovakia. She received an acting degree from the Jozef Adamovič Conservatory in Košice. Due to her move to the Czech Republic, she was unable to complete her studies at the St. Elisabeth University of Health and Social Work in Košice. She has been living in Mladá Boleslav since 2008. She has worked as a journalist for Romani, mainstream, and foreign media, collaborating with e.g. the Roma Press Agency in Slovakia and the Romani newspaper Romano nevo ľil. As part of an internship, she tried her hand at writing for the international magazine Transitions Online.

She has been writing poetry since childhood and has published an electronic collection entitled Láska a život (Love and Life, 2010). Her prose debut, “Postrážim ti dieťa” / “I Will Guard Your Child” was released in the collection O mulo! Povídky o duchách zemřelých (Look, A Ghost! Stories About the Ghosts of the Dead, Kher, 2019). At the TaBOOK festival in 2020 in Tábor, she presented her short story “Keď vzlietol Fénix” / “When the Phoenix Arose” to the local audience, and as part of the Paramisara (Slovo 21) and ROMEA TV event, she read her short story “Sliepkou k dospelosti” / “The Hen of Passage” in front of the cameras. A story of the same name was printed in the anthology Fameľija nadevše (Family Above All Else, Slovo 21, 2024) and the story “Ja radšej rodiť nebudem!” / “I’d Rather Not Have Babies!” came out in Podvázané mašličkami (Tubes Tied With Ribbons, Slovo 21, 2025). She writes in Slovak.
