Our Settlement: Happy, Sad and Magic Stories of the Roma

Through the eyes of a little Romani girl called Gužka, the author relates her childhood memories from a Slovak Romani settlement in the 1960s. Thanks to the child narrator, the stories are told in a primarily humorous, even idyllic light.

Gužka perceives the world around her—especially the adults and the coexistence of the Roma and Slovaks in the settlement and the village, the fashion, social and technological progress of the era and more—with surprising realism and a sense of perspective, yet she is not deprived of her childhood dreams, joys and worries.
