Jan Hauer was born to parents whose closest relatives, including their pre-war children, perished in the concentration camps at Lety u Písku and Auschwitz-Birkenau. Together with his father, he searched for clues to their fate, listened to the stories of the older generation and later collected old family photographs and historical documents. The result of many years of his effort is the memoir Moji lidi (My People, Kher, FF UK, ÚSD AV ČR 2024), a unique photographic collection and an extensive genealogical survey of the families he considered his own, thus for the first time opening a window into the little-known community of Czech Sinti.
